How to Bounce Back When Life Doesn’t Go As Planned

If there’s one thing life is good at, it’s surprising us.

No matter how carefully we plan, things don’t always unfold the way we expect.
Sometimes it’s a small disruption, like a client canceling at the last minute. Other times, it’s bigger—like a career path that suddenly shifts, or personal plans that fall apart despite your best intentions.

I used to believe that if I worked hard enough, I could control the outcomes. That if I put in the hours, followed the steps, and stayed disciplined, life would reward me with predictable results. But reality taught me something different: effort matters, but control is limited.

And that’s where resilience comes in.

Bouncing back doesn’t mean ignoring the disappointment. It doesn’t mean pretending you’re fine when you’re not. It’s about acknowledging the setback, learning what you can, and then choosing to keep moving.

As a freelancer, I know how discouraging it feels when you send out proposals—and get nothing back. That silence can weigh heavily. You start to wonder: Was my work not good enough? Did they even read it? Should I stop trying?

It stings. For a moment, it feels like all the effort was wasted. But over time, I’ve learned that those unanswered proposals aren’t the end of the story. Often, they make room for opportunities I didn’t expect—projects that fit me better, clients who value my skills more, and experiences that helped me grow in ways rejection never could.

Life not going as planned is not a punishment—it’s often a redirection.

The key is to stay open. To let go of what should have been and make space for what could be.

 Practical Ways to Bounce Back

  1. Allow yourself to feel it. Disappointment is natural. Give yourself permission to process the frustration instead of burying it.

  2. Ask: What’s still in my control? Focus on the actions you can take moving forward, instead of obsessing over what’s already lost.

  3. Look for the redirection. Many times, what feels like an ending—or even silence—is just the beginning of something better. Stay curious about where it might lead.

Life rarely follows the script we write in our heads. But maybe that’s not a bad thing. Because sometimes, the best chapters are the ones we never planned.

Discovering the "Parentified Daughter" Within Me

During my recent trip to Sagada from January 3-5, 2025, I had the privilege of meeting an amazing psychologist who shared an insightful perspective on my life. What started as a casual encounter turned into an impromptu consultation that left a profound impact on me. She recommended that I look up the term "parentified daughter," suggesting that it might resonate deeply with my experiences. As I delved into the concept, it was like holding a mirror to my life. Growing up as the eldest child, I never truly experienced what it meant to be a teenager. My childhood was overshadowed by responsibilities that were beyond my years. My father worked abroad, and my mother was busy with her own career, leaving me to take on the role of a caretaker for my younger siblings from an early age. Even as an elementary school student, I was tasked with ensuring my siblings returned home on time, completed their chores, and avoided conflict. It was a lot for a child to handle, but I didn’t ques...
