If there’s one thing life is good at, it’s surprising us.
No matter how carefully we plan, things don’t always unfold the way we expect.
Sometimes it’s a small disruption, like a client canceling at the last minute. Other times, it’s bigger—like a career path that suddenly shifts, or personal plans that fall apart despite your best intentions.
I used to believe that if I worked hard enough, I could control the outcomes. That if I put in the hours, followed the steps, and stayed disciplined, life would reward me with predictable results. But reality taught me something different: effort matters, but control is limited.
And that’s where resilience comes in.
Bouncing back doesn’t mean ignoring the disappointment. It doesn’t mean pretending you’re fine when you’re not. It’s about acknowledging the setback, learning what you can, and then choosing to keep moving.
As a freelancer, I know how discouraging it feels when you send out proposals—and get nothing back. That silence can weigh heavily. You start to wonder: Was my work not good enough? Did they even read it? Should I stop trying?
It stings. For a moment, it feels like all the effort was wasted. But over time, I’ve learned that those unanswered proposals aren’t the end of the story. Often, they make room for opportunities I didn’t expect—projects that fit me better, clients who value my skills more, and experiences that helped me grow in ways rejection never could.
Life not going as planned is not a punishment—it’s often a redirection.
The key is to stay open. To let go of what should have been and make space for what could be.
Practical Ways to Bounce Back
-
Allow yourself to feel it. Disappointment is natural. Give yourself permission to process the frustration instead of burying it.
-
Ask: What’s still in my control? Focus on the actions you can take moving forward, instead of obsessing over what’s already lost.
-
Look for the redirection. Many times, what feels like an ending—or even silence—is just the beginning of something better. Stay curious about where it might lead.
Life rarely follows the script we write in our heads. But maybe that’s not a bad thing. Because sometimes, the best chapters are the ones we never planned.
